But no matter how hard I tried to look the part, there was still something missing. As president of English Club, I organized the rehearsal of Snow White for an English party. 能听懂他人比较纯正的英语，不仅是英语考试的需要，也是同学们未来步入社会，施展才能所必需的技能。我们平时的听力训练不仅仅是在训练你的英语听力，其实它也是一种语感培养，充足的英语听力训练同时也会极大的有助于提高学习者的口语能力。鉴于同学们不可能自己抽出多少时间去听英语歌曲、看英文电影或者直接用英语与人口头交流，那么，充分利用好本年级统一的听力训练时间就显得尤其重要。在听力训练中，既要学会抓关键词，也要学会听懂完整的句子；既要学会听懂不同语音语调对语意的影响，也要学会听懂有失去爆破和连读现象的句子。有难度的听力训练试题最好是能在过了一段时间后，等到忘记得差不多时，有再听一次的机会。所以在做听力训练试题时，我建议同学们一律用铅笔做记号，对完答案、看完录音文字材料后再把铅笔痕迹察掉。
英语的口头表达能力虽然不是我们考试的必备能力，但它却是同学们将来所需要的最重要的，最实用的英语技能。一口流利的英语是每一个英语学习者所梦想达到的理想水平。重视口语能力的训练不仅对未来有重要意义，对提高同学们高中阶段的英语水平也有非常重要的意义。说英语就是运用英语。语言能力和语言知识，同许多其它能力和知识一样，只有通过运用，并且经常运用才会真正地学到手，学到家。英语是一门语言。语言是听出来的，是经过不断模仿后才能说出来的。高中生的英语口语能力要求，除了一般日常交际应答以外，还应该具备能连续表达含五个以上的句子。练就一口流畅的英语口语需要同学们抓住三个机会：一是课堂上老师为同学们提供的开口机会。二是课前演讲或者值日报告的机会。三是早读是个好机会。早读不应该总是停留在背单词、背课文这样的简单劳动中。单词不是用来背诵的。朗读单词的目的是要把单词的发音读准，并且能上口，读起来不勉强，不绕口。课文也不是用来背诵的。熟读课文是为了加深理解，巩固词汇知识和语法知识。既然口语能力那么重要，同学们不妨把背诵或者复述课文当成是口语表达或者演讲的准备呢？换句话说，把课文材料准备得再熟悉不过以后，来一次演讲展示，那且不美哉！真正的高英语水平绝不是看书看出来的，也不是做习题能做出来的，更不是听老师讲课能听出来的。早读期间通过不断模仿，放声吼叫，反复实践，你一定能快速提高自己的口语表达能力。
英语短文阅读的重要性不仅表现在高中英语考试中它的份量最大，而且还表现在英语短文是英语词汇知识和语法知识的载体方面。词汇量的扩大、词汇知识的丰富和句子表达的多样性光靠死记硬背是无法也不可能实现的。扩大词汇量、丰富自己的词汇知识和地道完美的表达自己只有依靠优良的阅读习惯。教材课文是精读材料，需要同学们读熟读透，直至能开口娓娓道来为止。课外阅读又叫泛读。高中英语新课标教材对高中前八个模块的学习有一个要求：课外阅读要完成30万单词的阅读量。也就是说：同学们需要每天有500到700个单词量的阅读。课外阅读也是运用语言的一种必不可少的形式。课外阅读不能停留在完成几道阅读理解试题或者完形填空试题。关键在尽量弄懂文章中的每一句话含义、长难句的结构。留意你还不很熟悉的词汇、词汇知识和语法知识。还要去认真体会不同的英语句子在表达上的精确性。千万不要在一些你还不认识的，拼写怪诞，发音困难的生僻词汇上浪费时间和精力。
阅读能力，除词汇量大小以外，还包含阅读速度、长难句理解、和把握主题大意的能力。要会快速阅读，同学们必须学会一些阅读的技能：如：skimming(跳读)、scanning(扫读)和digesting(研读)。Skimming和scanning就是根据阅读任务在文中查找相关信息。Digesting主要是用来理解长难句、把握主题大意和作者意图以及猜测词义的技术。不仅要研读长难句结构，也还需要研读逻辑关系。
流畅的短文表达能力在很大程度上依赖于你的词汇量、词汇知识和句法知识。它们的积累在于平时的听、说和读的活动。写作表达能力中，你的英语句式的结构思维能力或者英语习惯思维能力会对表达能力有重要影响。这就需要同学们平时养成一个良好习惯：那就是总是试图用英语来表达出你眼睛所看到的，耳朵能听到的，身体能感受到的和你思想能想到的。除此之外，一篇优秀的短文还少不了三个要素：即结构，内容和语言。
一片结构完美的英文短文，尤其是说明文和议论文，往往有一个比较完优美的，诱人深入阅读的开头语。主题句是可从开头语中自然而然过度而来。你所程述的观点，一般都要用事实做论证，或者用具体方式方法来支持。巧妙的结论句往往能使文章锦上添花。
内容需要真实，合乎情理，能让人信服。文中不要有与主题无关的内容。
语言要尽可能是地道的，去汉语化的英语。要经常套用自己在阅读中、在课堂上学来句子结构去表达自己。要敢于尝试用比较复杂的句子结构和比较高级的词汇来使文章进一步美化。
听所读写四大技能并不是各自孤立的，也是相互作用和相互制约的`。如果平时，只注重某一项技能的学习和训练，那是不可能成为一位真正的英语强手的。
任何一门学科都需要踏实的学习作风。外语也不例外。学外语的实主要表现在以下几个方面：
一、落实词汇、词汇知识和特殊句式的积累。落实词汇和词汇知识并不是反复背记词汇表中的单词。落实词汇、词汇知识以及特殊句式的最好办法是先探究后运用。一个词汇在经过七到八次在不同时间和不同的语境中运用后，它就是你的了。词汇知识和特殊句式也是一样。写作是运用，造句是运用，阅读，倾听和与他人用英语交流也是运用。借助词典进行造句练习，在造句中运用新学的词汇不失为一种行之有效的简单易行的方式。
二、落实课外阅读。每天坚持花半小时阅读一两篇短文。一要真正读懂。二要留意词汇运用。
三、落实早自习精读。每次有硬指标，死任务。
四、落实课内课外书面作业。简单的完成老师布置的作业量并不是落实。书面作业质的落实必须是在真正懂了、记住了的基础上又快又好的独立的、闭卷式的完成书面作业。对发现的漏洞和缺陷要采取补救措施。
五、落实自主探究的学习能力培养。学习中缺乏自主探究，不善于利用团队合作和与老师沟通是很多高中生在学习中存在的一种普遍想象。老师不是保姆，老师不可能把英语的词汇知识和英语的四大能力烹制成一道道佳肴后，一口一口地喂进学生的口中。老师的探究代替不了学生的探究。学习能力的培养主要是探究能力的培养。学会了探究，你才会在知识的大海中畅游。学会了探究，你才会成为终身学习者。英语学科的探究应该表现在对某一特定词汇在文中、在句中的用法和含义的探究，对长难句结构和含义的探究，对相关知识关联的探究，对作者意图、主题大意的探究，当然也包含对学法的探究。要探究知识，要有工具（词典以及各种手册等）的帮助，更要有团队的合作，还要有老师的帮助。团队合作可以让你取他人之长补自己之短，还可以集思广益，产生思想火花。常与老师沟通是可以使你更容易发现前进的方向，少走弯路。

2. We now face renewed challenges as a nation. Terrorism is a real and continuing threat. Our economy has also been hit by the global economic slowdown，and more recently by SARS. Even after our economy recovers，we will face formidable competitors，especially in China and India.
3. We can overcome these challenges. We have faced up to many challenges before，especially when independence was first thrust upon us. We are in a stronger position today than in 1965. We have a skilled population，a world-class infrastructure，and the confidence of international investors. Most importantly，we are a united people，determined to meet challenges together.

4. A strong nation is not just made up of individuals，however talented. It rests on our collective efforts as one people.
5. Our experience with SARS is a good example of how we can overcome great challenges if we work together. All Singaporeans played a part in fighting SARS - the doctors and nurses in our hospitals，defence engineers working on the thermal scanners，the cleaning staff in our buildings and food centres，and everyone of you in our schools.
6. Our schools can take pride in how we stood up to the challenge of SARS. It has been a massive task to monitor the well being of more than half a million pupils and give their parents confidence in the safety of our schools. Our principals，teachers and other school staff rose to the challenge，calmly and meticulously. As pupils，you played your part well，by taking your temperature daily and exercising responsibility to prevent the spread of the disease. Even our Primary 1 and 2 pupils learnt how to take their own temperatures with the guidance of their teachers. The fact that a very large majority of parents sent their children back to schools as soon as we reopened them was a major vote of confidence，especially in our teachers.

Quite frankly, military training is tiring. I’ve been told a million times about how exhausted I would be as soon as I finished this grueling training, and I don’t have any objection about that. However, now, I’ve got an Yes and No! I mean, physically,Yes, I have sun-tanned skin right now and for the first time I loathe being under the sun. Not to mention my sore legs and back. But this is just the heads of the coin. Tails, which means mentally, No! My inability to find proper words to express my feelings seems more and more overwhelming. Incredible? Unbelievable? Marvellous? Extremely impeccable maybe? These words are pale in comparison to the big picture of my future life. It’s like unwittingly, you fall in love with a new group of people, you feel for everything, you fall for everything.
I don’t know if I am being sensitive here. I remember us sprint out the door to assemble because we are running late. I remember us complaining about the miserable food when it’s time for lunch. I remember us sitting weirdly comfortable in a cool dark place when other classes were sweating. I remember us sharing jaw-dropping details about our lives and feel connected to others. I remember all those moments of rapture and ecstasy, all those senses of déjà vu, all those smiles of genuine happiness.
It’s like suddenly, I am no longer a prosaic girl living a plain life. It’s been a long time since the last time I didn’t regard myself as a catastrophe. Without question, many of us have mastered the neurotic art of spendingmuch of our lives worrying about variety of things -- all at once. We allow pastproblems and future concerns to dominate your present moments, so much so thatwe end up anxious, frustrated, depressed, and hopeless. On the flip side, wealso postpone our gratification, our stated priorities, and our happiness, oftenconvincing ourselves that "someday" will be much better than today.Unfortunately, the same mental dynamics that tell us to look toward the futurewill only repeat themselves so that 'someday' never actually arrives. JohnLennone once said, "Life is what is happening while we are busy making otherplans." When we are busy making 'other plans', our children are busy growing up,the people we love are moving away and dying, our bodies are getting out ofshape, and our dreams are slipping away. In short, we miss out on life.
Many people lives as if life is a dress rehearsal for some later date. Itisn't. In fact, no one has a guarantee that he or she will be here tomorrow. Nowis the only time we have, and the only time that we have any control over. Whenour attention is in the present moment, we push fear from our minds. Fear is theconcern over events that might happen in the future -- we won't have enoughhmoney, our children will get into trouble, we will get old and die,whatever.
To combat fear, the best stradegy is to learn to bring your attention backto the present. Mark Twain said,"I have been through some terrible things inlife, some of which actually happened." I don't think I can say it any better.Practice keeping your attention on the here and now. Your effort will pay greatdividends.
